French Language

Bonjour and bienvenue to the French language course at Dialecta!

"La grandeur de l'homme est dans sa décision d'être plus fort que sa condition"

- Le Mythe de Sisyphe, Albert Camus

The French language has its origins in the Latin language, spoken by the Romans in the province of Gaul (modern-day France) during ancient times. Over the centuries, Latin evolved into various dialects, eventually forming the modern French language. It is estimated that around 76 million people speak French as their first language worldwide. The majority reside in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Canada, and parts of Africa where French is the official language. French is also widely spoken as a second language. Approximately 274 million people around the world speak French as a second language, often for work, education, or cultural purposes. Learning French opens doors to a rich cultural heritage, literature, cinema, and art. French is an official language in 29 countries, including France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Canada, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Senegal, DR Congo, Madagascar, Mauritius, St. Lucia, and others. Additionally, French is extensively used as an official language in international organisations, including the United Nations, the European Union, and the International Olympic Committee.

Did you know?

The largest French-speaking city is not Paris, Brussels, or Montreal, but Kinshasa, the capital of the DR Congo. This city, home to 17,032,322 people (2024), speaks both French and Lingala (a Bantu language).

Whether you are a beginner or have some prior knowledge, our outstanding teachers are here to help you achieve your language goals. Alongside their French language degrees, they have extensive experience teaching the language to both children and adults. They have worked in both public and private schools, institutes, and universities, and have studied abroad, obtaining internationally recognised certifications. Having lived and worked in French-speaking countries, they have perfected their language skills through interactions with native speakers. Our French courses are available for ages 6 and up, and cater to all CEFR levels. More information about CEFR levels can be found here

Our curriculum is structured for gradual and systematic learning, beginning with greetings and self-introductions, progressing to discussing past and future events, and advancing to reading and understanding artistic and scientific texts. Starting with the present tense of verbs, particularly être and avoir, you will move on to the past tense (passé composé), and eventually master the unique French « le subjonctif », forming complex sentences and essays. We follow the principle of individualised instruction, aiming to maximise each student’s potential by prioritising your individual goals and aspirations.
