Serbian belongs to the South Slavic branch of Slavic languages. It was standardised in the 19th century, forming the foundation of modern Serbian language and literature, thanks to figures like Vuk Karadžić. Serbian is the official language of Serbia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it is widely spoken among Serbian diaspora communities around the world, including in Austria, Switzerland, Canada, Romania, and many other countries. Serbian is unique in being the only language in the world that equally uses two scripts - Cyrillic and Latin, allowing Serbian speakers to read and write fluently in both scripts. It is estimated that around 12 million people speak Serbian as their native language.
Our passionate teachers are equally excited about sharing their knowledge of both foreign languages and their native Serbian. This team includes teachers with degrees in Serbian language and literature, as well as advanced qualifications in teaching Serbian to foreigners. With experience at the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU), working on the Serbian Dictionary, they bring valuable insights to their teaching practice, which they continuously apply in working with children and adults. Our expert team, with extensive experience in language instruction, will ensure that you master Serbian with ease and gain lasting knowledge. The Serbian for foreigners language course is open to all ages, from six years and up, and covers all language proficiency levels according to CEFR standards. Our programme is designed to be gradual and systematic, starting with basics like greetings, naming colours, furniture, food, and drinks, and progressing to more complex language forms such as essays and scientific texts. At the beginner level, you will learn the present, perfect, and future tenses, and five out of the seven cases in the Serbian language. By the end of the beginner level, you will be able to read and use Serbian Cyrillic. At higher levels, learned material is reviewed and systemized. You will be able to use all verb forms, cases, and write complex sentences. At the highest levels, you will expand your understanding and usage of more complicated forms and examples, achieving a proficiency comparable to that of native speakers. Each course at Dialecta is tailored to the individual progress of each student. Our teachers aim to bring out the full potential of each group by maximising the potential of every individual.
